John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 ? June 21, 2001) was an influential American post-war blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter born in Coahoma County near Clarksdale, Mississippi. From a musical family, he was a cousin of Earl Hooker. John was also influenced by his stepfather, a local blues guitarist, who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time.[1] John developed a half-spoken style that was his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music was rhythmically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his own unique genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving rhythm into his masterful and idiosyncratic blues guitar and singing. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen" (1948) and "Boom Boom" (1962).

Hooker's guitar playing is closely aligned with piano Boogie Woogie. He would play the walking bass pattern with his thumb, stopping to emphasize the end of a line with a series of trills, done by rapid hammer-ons and pull-offs. The songs that most epitomize his early sound are "Boogie Chillen", about being 17 and wanting to go out to dance at the Boogie clubs, "Baby Please Don't Go", a blues standard first recorded by Big Joe Williams, and "Tupelo Blues",[10] a stunningly sad song about the flooding of Tupelo, Mississippi in April 1936.

He maintained a solo career, popular with blues and folk music fans of the early 1960s and crossed over to white audiences, giving an early opportunity to the young Bob Dylan. As he got older, he added more and more people to his band, changing his live show from simply Hooker with his guitar to a large band, with Hooker singing.

His vocal phrasing was less closely tied to specific bars than most blues singers'. This casual, rambling style had been gradually diminishing with the onset of electric blues bands from Chicago but, even when not playing solo, Hooker retained it in his sound.

Though Hooker lived in Detroit during most of his career, he is not associated with the Chicago-style blues prevalent in large northern cities, as much as he is with the southern rural blues styles, known as delta blues, country blues, folk blues, or "front porch blues". His use of an electric guitar tied together the Delta blues with the emerging post-war electric blues.[11]

His songs have been covered by The White Stripes, MC5, The Doors, George Thorogood, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, R. L. Burnside, the J. Geils Band and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

ミシシッピ州クラークスデイル生まれ。生まれた年については、1915年、1920年など諸説あるものの、1917年説が最も一般的である。1943年、デトロイトに移住。1948年にレコード・ディーラのバーニー・ベスマンの誘いを受け、初レコーディングを経験する。翌年1月、モダンより発表となった"Boogie Chillen"がR&Bチャートを昇りつめる大ヒットとなった。このヒットにより、他のレーベルからも誘いを受けるものの、モダンとの契約で縛られていたジョン・リーは、様々な変名を使い、複数のレーベルに作品をレコーディングしていった。

1970年代半ば頃までABCに在籍するが、その後は暫く新作からは遠ざかっている。1980年の映画『ブルース・ブラザーズ』に出演し、シカゴのマックスウェル・ストリートのストリート・ミュージシャンを演じた。1984年7月には、ブラック・ミュージック・リヴュー招聘で、ロバート・クレイとともに来日を果たし、全国6都市で公演を行う。晩年ツアーを嫌ったジョン・リーにとって、結局これが唯一の来日公演となった。

新作から遠ざかっていたジョン・リーだったが、1989年、カルロス・サンタナ、ボニー・レイット、ロス・ロボスら豪華ゲストを迎えたアルバム『Healer』で華々しくカムバックを果たす。このアルバムは、グラミー賞を獲得し、再び存在感をみせつけることになった。翌1990年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たしている。

続く『Mr. Lucky』 (1991年) にもライ・クーダー、ジョニー・ウィンター、キース・リチャーズらが参加。旧知のヴァン・モリソンとの共演も実現している。モリソンは『Chill Out』 (1995年)、『Don't Look Back』 (1997年) にも参加している他、モリソンのアルバム『Too Long In Exile』(1993年) へのジョン・リーのゲスト参加もあった。

2001年6月21日、ジョン・リーはカリフォルニア州サンフランシスコ近郊ロス・アルトスの自宅で、就寝中に老衰のため死去した。

カムバック後は、幅広いアーティスト達との共演を重ねた。デニス・ホッパー監督の映画『ホット・スポット』のサウンドトラックでのマイルス・デイヴィスとの共演、ピート・タウンゼントの『Iron Man』 (1989年)、ビッグ・ヘッド・トッド& ザ・モンスターズの『Beautiful World』 (1997年)などへの参加がある。トミー・カストロの2001年のアルバム『Guilty Of Love』への参加は、ジョン・リーの最も晩年のゲスト参加のひとつである。

自己名義の作品としては、前述の『Don't Look Back』がラストとなったが、その翌年1998年リリースのベスト盤『The Best Of Friends』にも新録が3曲収録されている。また、没後の2003年発表の『Face To Face』は、未発表音源にゲスト・ミュージシャンのオーバーダブを施した作品であり、事実上のラスト・アルバムとも言える内容である。
